A Week in Pictures 29/05/11 Plus NOTD :)

Just a little mini update as I'm aware I've been AWOL for a few days! ;)

My parents are staying with us for a few days as they've sold their house! So they're house hunting at the moment...
Last Sunday it was my friends birthday and we went out for a meal at Sakushi in Sheffield. I didn't actually have any actual sushi as I chose veg gyoza (dumplings), miso soup and edamame beans. My friend and her boyfriend did and they loved it! I really enjoyed mine too.

There was a nice atmosphere and quite a few other people in there too. There is a conveyor belt with the sushi on which is quite fun. We had to stop ourselves from eating more (or in my case I had to resist every time I saw the little cheesecakes whoosh past!) The food tasted delicious and fresh. I would recommend eating there if you are in Sheffield!
I bought myself these tulips after work on Monday as they were reduced to £1.50. They have actually perked up and are still looking pretty today (Sunday!) :)

I felt a bit like Morrisey on the way home as I was waving the flowers to hail the bus... ;)
Nails of the Day!

(I used the wrapping tape trick to get the lines straight!)
I had the day off work on Thursday and decided I'd risk it and have a wander round Meadowhall for the afternoon...

I missed a tram by seconds (I actually ran for it and got there as it closed its doors... boo!) so waited for the next one. We didn't even get as far as the next stop as a car ran a red light and the tram hit it!

I saw it happen (the tram honked it's horn) and just saw the car fly through the air and felt the tram shudder. Luckily, the guy in the car got out - but as you can see his car was a bit worse for wear!

It was a little bit surreal and I'm glad nobody was hurt as it could have been a lot worse.
I decided to get the bus to Meadowhell as I was a bit wired (maybe I should have seen it all as a sign not to go!) and ended my day with a few dishes from Yo! Sushi as they have an offer on some of their plates on a Thursday.

I was a little disappointed with the food as the veggie noodles came with a piece of chicken on them... Nice! And the veg gyoza were cooked to within an inch of their lives! I'd also been craving mochi forever and they took my order and said it would be a few minutes... About 10 minutes later they came and told me it wasn't defrosted. Sad tummy :(

What have you all been up to this week? :)

Fizzy Lemon & Cola Tart Recipe by Gizzi Erskine

I made this at the weekend as we were going up to Mr Pinklittlebeans parents for birthday lunch...

I found the recipe in a magazine a while ago, but managed to give the magazine away without cutting out the recipe! I searched high and low for the recipe and managed to salvage it from a fellow blogger who kindly emailed it to me!

It was definitely worth the hassle of getting hold of it! :)

The tart is really lemony (if I can use that as a descriptive term!) and the cola in the pastry almost caramelises. The popping candy really does work with the tart, but you can omit it if you don't fancy it (or can't find any!)

It is fairly time consuming but as I said, it was worth it :) And it's a dessert to get people talking!

Ingredients

225g Plain flour
Pinch of salt
150g Butter
1 Egg yolk
3 Tbsp cola
5 Unwaxed lemons, juiced with zest of 3
6 Eggs, two whole, 4 yolks
200g Caster sugar
200ml Double cream
Icing sugar for decorating
2 Packets cola flavoured popping candy

* In a food processor mix the flour, salt and butter until it resembles bread crumbs.

* Add the egg yolk and cola to form a ball of dough.

* Wrap in cling film and chill in fridge for 30min.

* Crack eggs into a bowl and whisk in sugar until combines.

* Whisk in cream, lemon juice and zest, then set aside.

* Place a 23cm flan tin on a baking sheet.

* On a surface dusted with icing sugar, roll out the pastry.

* Lift onto rolling pin then drape over the flan tin, leaving the excess hanging.
* Press the pastry into the sides and put into fridge for 20 minutes.

* Preheat oven to 200 degrees.

* Remove tin and bake for 20-25min until golden (NOTE: Use Baking Beans!)

* Lower to 140 degrees and trim off extra pastry.

* Pour filling into tin and bake for 35-40 minutes or until almost set.

* Leave to cool, sprinkle with icing sugar.
* Blow torch the top until golden and leave to set for 10minutes.

* Sprinkle with popping candy & serve!

Mini Update and Giveaway Reminder!

Hello :) Hope you are all well and having a nice weekend so far! Any plans?

I'm going out in a bit for a friends birthday. We're just going to the pub, but I'm having a bit of a crisis of "what to wear"! I have absolutely no inspiration at all today :( I got some high waisted shorts recently and haven't worn them yet, but don't want to look like a boy scout if I get it wrong :S

Any suggestions?? I'll post pics if I come up with something post-worthy! :)

I went for a nap earlier as I was feeling a bit blah so I'm trying to perk myself up now with a can of Mountain Dew Energy (I don't usually drink fizzy but I'm a bit hooked on this!)

Tomorrow it's Mr Pinklittlebeans parents birthday lunch/party. I made a Fizzy Lemon & Cola Tart from a Gizzi Erskine Recipe I'd found in a magazine a while ago, I'll share the recipe with you in a separate post (providing it goes down well!!)

It has coca cola and popping candy in, so the results could be interesting! I'm hoping it tastes as good as it sounds because it's taken quite a while to make!

Tomorrow evening I'm meeting one of my friends for her birthday and we're going for sushi at Sakushi in Sheffield. I'm quite excited about that (and of course seeing her!) I've been craving sushi for a while :) I'll try and remember to take some pictures!

May is a busy month for birthdays!

Also, a little reminder (if you haven't already!), why not enter my first mini giveaway? You could win these goodies! :)

Paneer, Potato and Pea Curry Recipe by Jamie Oliver

I made this the other night for my tea, it's taken from the Jamie Oliver 20 Minute Meals App for the ipod. It does take slightly longer than 20 minutes, but it very yummy none-the-less! :)

Ingredients (serves 4)

250g Paneer cheese
2 Medium potatoes
150g Frozen cheese
300g Basmati rice
8 Green cardamom pods
1 Small bunch fresh coriander
2 Medium red onions
2 Garlic cloves
5cm Fresh ginger
1 tbsp Korma curry paste
1 tsp Cumin seeds
1 tsp Ground tumeric
1/2 tsp Garam masala
1 tsp Tomato puree
100ml Creme fraiche
1 Knob of butter
Vegetable oil
Sea salt
1. Fill your kettle and put it on to boil. Preheat oven to the lowest setting and place 5 bowls in the oven to warm.

2. Fill the saucepan with the boiling water and place on a high heat. Once boiling, add the rice and cardamom pods. Simmer according to packet instructions until the rice is cooked. Meanwhile...

3. Roughly chop the coriander leaves and put to one side, reserve the stalks.

4. Peel and halve the onions then peel garlic and ginger. Whiz the garlic and ginger with the coriander stalks and 1 of the onion in a food processor until you have a paste.

5. Place a wok on a medium heat. Cut the paneer into cubes. Finely slice the remaining onion.

6. Add a splash of vegetable oil to the hot wok then stir-fry the paneer with a pinch of salt until golden brown. Tip into one of your warmed bowls then pop back in the oven to keep warm.

7. Carefully wipe the wok clean with paper towel and place it back on the heat.

8. Add a splash of vegetable oil to the wok and when it's hot, add the paste from the processor, the korma sauce, cumin seeds, tumeric, garam masala and sliced onion.
9. Fry and stir the mixture until the onions are soft and the mixture is golden and smells fantastic. This is your curry base. Meanwhile...

10. When the rice is done, drain it in a sieve, then place the sieve back over the warm saucepan. Add the knob of butter to the rice and cover with a lid or aluminum foil.

11. Peel the potato and cut it into little chunks. You want them smaller than your paneer cubes.

12. Once the curry base is golden, add the potato chunks and the tomato puree. Pour in 300ml hot water and stir well.

13. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 5 to 10 minutes until the potato chunks are cooked through and tender.

14. Once the potatoes are cooked, tip the peas and paneer into the wok and stir through. Turn the heat off and cover with a lid.

15. Make your table look respectable. Get the cutlery, salt and pepper and drinks laid out nicely and lay out poppadoms and naan breads if you have them.

16. Get your warmed bowls out of the oven and divide the buttery cardamom rice between them.

17. Taste the curry season with a little salt if you need to then gently stir in the creme fraiche so it ripples through the curry. Spoon this over the rice, scatter with coriander and tuck in!

Top 5 Beauty Items - May ♥

I've had quite a productive day so far as I had the day off work today (my shifts vary from week to week as I work over seven days... Bye bye weekend!)

I nipped into town, Castle Market predominantly, and bought some goodies (mainly fresh fruit and veg!).

I'm planning on making a Jamie Oliver curry recipe later on (which if I remember to!) I'll do a post about. It's the paneer, potato and pea one from the "20 Minute" meals. I've made it once before and really liked it so thought it would be nice to try again.

I thought I would do a monthly post about my top 5 beauty items of the moment...

My May Top 5!
Colgate Max White One

I bought this about a month ago when it was on offer in Tesco and I would definitely recommend it. I've used Crest strips in the past which are themselves pretty awesome but they make my teeth hurt like hell (too sensitive) so I am loathed to use them that often :(

I've noticed a difference in the whiteness of my teeth already and intend on carrying on using it! I do use it with an electric toothbrush which I also think makes a difference to me personally.

It's available in most drugstores and supermarkets, priced around £4 and I believe is on offer in ASDA at the moment for £3.

I cannot recommend this highly enough! I bought a bottle after reading Dainty Dresses blog review and boy was she right!

My hair is a bit problematic. Although it's short, it's fairly fine and gets greasy quickly. I also have the problem that with certain brands that are suitable for greasier hair, I have some kind of allergy to.

I went into Lush and bought a bottle of this and used it straight away. The difference was almost immediate! My hair felt cleaner and had some volume to it (bye bye lankness!) and here is no slimey residue.

I have been using it ever since and have now donated my unused shampoos to my Mum as I don't think I'll be going back! I am now looking for a similar conditioner for use maybe once or twice a week.

There was also another benefit for me from swapping shampoo. I have quite bad skin (acne) and in the last 6 months or so my back had regressed to how it was when I was a teenager (I'm now 26). Obviously this was quite upsetting as I thought I'd outgrown at least the back acne.

Anyway, since using I Love Juicy, my back has almost totally cleared up. I'm now convinced it was down to using a different product.

The product is quite pricey (starting at £4.45) BUT it does last a very long time as you only need to use a small amount.

I was wandering around Meadowhall with a friend and got "attacked" by one of the sales girls for Origins, asking did I want to try some of this ;)

I was feeling a bit warm and flustered, as you do in big shopping centres so I said I would. She dabbed a bit on my temples and a bit on the back of my neck. Oh my! It was lovely!

It's cooling and calming. I genuinely did feel better almost instantly and a lot less tense.

I bought some when I went there next and have to say it is a staple in my handbag. Whether I have a headache or am feeling a bit aaargh, I dab a little bit on and calm is restored!

Again, it is a bit pricey, at £11 for the little bottle, but you only need to use the tiniest amount.

I bought this brush recently when The Body Shop had an offer for 30% off, buy one get the second half price and free postage (you could use all offers together!).

I currently use a Tangle Teezer to brush my hair when I get out of the shower, but after that, I just point and aim the hairdryer at my head and that's about it ;)

This is so easy to use, my hair gets a bit of volume and it looks a lot more like it does when I come out of the hairdressers - yay! :)

I got this on a whim whilst in Boots looking at their 3 for 2.

The lipstick is fab, it really does live up to its name of lasting fix! I'm a bit useless when it comes to wearing makeup (or rather the upkeep once I'm out!).

I wore this on Saturday night to the pub. I'd put it on just before I left and then didn't re-apply (or even nip to the loos and take a look). It was still in place by the time I got home (after a few pints!) and looked as good as it did when I left! No smudges, no budges and no looking like Courtney Love ;)

I love the colour, it's not too shiney and doesn't dry your lips out. It suits my skin tone too (I have freckles and I think that makes some colours look a bit urgh on me!)

I wear it with a bit of mascara and a flick of black eyeliner for a classic look :)
Close up swatch!

Work in Progress...

After reading the very helpful twitter chat (#bbloggers) I've decided to have a bit of a blog overhaul!

I'm not exactly a html wiz, so I'm still working on that but I think I prefer the blog at the moment a little plainer - what do you think?

I have also set up a twitter account specifically for my blog, so if you're on twitter, come say hello @pinklittlebean :)

Cornwall...

A little bit about me...

I was born in Barnet, North London and moved to Cornwall when I was three (with my parents I hasten to add, I would have been a very independent three year old otherwise ;))

I lived on the Lizard Point in Cornwall (Cadgwith to be exact) until I was 18 and then left to study at University in Sheffield.

8 years later and I'm still here! :)

Anyway, brief history of where I have resided aside, I'm going to be visiting Cornwall in a few weeks time, for possibly the last time in a while (I've actually not been home for about 18 months!)

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what I (and Mr Pinklittlebean) could do?

We'll definitely be going to the Eden Project as we're going to see the Flaming Lips - woo :)

I was thinking maybe a trip to the Minack Theatre as I've not been there since I was at primary school... Maybe a mosey around Falmouth? Any other suggestions? :)

A Night in Pictures 07/05/11

I thought I'd share a few pics from last weekends housewarming/birthday affair...
I tidied the flat up - evidence!!
The spread, I love a good spread me ;)
The only picture I took of my boozey jelly creation... Which actually turned into a mini disaster!

I'd planned to layer it... The red layer was raspberry flavour with gin in, the orange layer was orange with melon liquer in and the yellow layer was lemon with limoncello in!

The outcome was tasty (I'd also made mini jelly shots in little glasses) but the bottom layer hadn't "stuck" with the top two so it came out separately! I think I need a bit more practise but it all got eaten :)

The drink behind it (next to the Gordons can!) is the remnants of a Yorkshire G&Tea - they went down a treat, I wish I'd made more but our fridge is a bit pathetic size wise! Recipe can be found here!
 I love my friends t-shirt!
A very tipsy me (on the left, look at my eyes!!) and my friend Emma! She is an artist and makes lovely jewellery which you can find here!

:)
